Lake Havasu City is one of the fastest growing and "hottest" communities in the Southwest US. The community has two wwtp facilities; Island and Mulberry Street. Each of these plants needed expansion with the current plan developed by the city. Famous for the LONDON BRIDGE - Havasu also has recognition for growth and year-round entertainment for young and retired people.
Burns & McDonnell Engineering has developed a plan to expand the wwtp to eliminate the existing community's septic tanks from service. While a controversial plan to increase sewer service fees, eliminating of thousands of septic tanks will benefit the community and Colorado River basin. Therefore, the existing wwtp's need to be expanded and immediately. A plan was developed.
ISLAND Plant is the most critical facility. Installed 15 years ago, a single basin could not be expanded. Land was not available and hydraulics did not allow for construction. Therefore, a plan needed to be developed to double the plant flow without new concrete construction.
A plan was developed to remove the existing equipment and reinstall new equipment in less than 24 hours. This plan was implemented by SBD Construction with Schreiber's assistance in 6.5 HOURS. The wwtp facility now eliminates the need for the internal recycle for nitrate removal and the plant operates as a standard GRO treatment facility as compared to previous process layouts.
